India has marked the nation’s 69th Independence Day.

The celebrations in Male’ kicked off with a flag hoisting ceremony in the Indian High Commission, led by Indian High Commissioner Rajiv Shahare. He spoke on those who had struggled for the nation’s independence from the British.

Shahare noted that India had experienced the effects of slavery on the entire nation, with the loss of many lives. He said that India, free from English slavery, is now an economic powerhouse and the largest democracy. He also said that India had not looked back since its independence in 1947 and had consistently demonstrated an excellent example of democracy. He cited that this was the reason for India’s success.

Indian Cultural Center had presented various entertainment events as well as a feast.
