Criminal Court Chief Justice, Abdulla Mohamed has said that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Jumhooree Party leader Gasim Ibrahim were the first to be arrested against the law since the implementation of the new constitution.
Chief Justice, Abdulla Mohamed made this remark speaking at the ceremony held to celebrate the anniversary of the Criminal Court. He said that the first to submit a case at the criminal court regarding the unlawful arrest were the former attorney generals, Azima Shukoor and Dr. Hassan Saeed.
He said that they submitted the case asking for a verdict to declare the innocence of President Yameen and Gasim and to declare their arrest as unlawful.
While President Yameen and Gasim Ibrahim was arrested during the presidency of Mohamed Nasheed on the claim of protecting them, the current Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel was arrested five times during Nasheed’s presidency.
In addition to that, Judge Abdulla was “kidnapped” by Nasheed’s government and the Deputy Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis then Ahmed Nazim was also arrested unlawfully.
