Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar have said there is no change in the level of terrorism and extremism in Maldives in the last 12 years.

Speaking to the press today, the minister said that religious extremism is a priority area for the government. “Doing what is commanded by Allah is not extremism. What we consider as extremism are things that are even disputed among scholars and things that harm other people” said the minister.

The minister said that the government will support to promote the spirit of Islam in the nation. He said that terror activities in Maldives are closely related to political activities. In addition he said that at the moment there are 61 Maldivians fighting in foreign wars. This is 12 figures more than the previously announced figure. He did not say whether 12 additional people went, or it is just new information.

Furthermore, he said that the authorities stopped 68 people who tried to leave the country for war and those includes 9 minors. He also said that 21 people were arrested by Turkish authorities as well.
