Parliament passes to repeal the anti-defamation act

Parliament of the Maldives has passed to repeal the anti-defamation act. The act was nullified with the votes of 48 members.

 

Among the members present in today’s sessions 17 members voted against repealing the act. Meanwhile 2 members did not vote either way. 

 

Speaking at today’s session some members said that even though RajjeTV and VTV were fined up to 2 million Rufiyaa, Channel 13 was never fined despite the channel slandering opposition leaders. The said that this shows that the legislation was used to silence the opposition aligned media which exposed the corruption of the government.
