Maldives raises concern at OIC over Israel’s recognition of Somaliland

The Maldives has expressed strong concern over Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland as an independent state, warning that the move violates international law and threatens Somalia’s sovereignty.

Speaking at the 22nd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel said the decision breaches Somalia’s territorial integrity and contradicts the principles of the United Nations Charter. He cautioned that unilateral recognition undermines international norms and risks further destabilizing an already fragile region, particularly amid heightened global tensions and the ongoing conflict in Palestine.

Dr Khaleel also criticized Israel’s conduct during the current ceasefire in Gaza, stating that continued disregard for international law erodes the rules-based international order. He warned that such actions set a dangerous precedent, especially for small states like the Maldives that rely on international law to protect their sovereignty and independence.

The extraordinary OIC session was convened to discuss the implications of Israel’s decision and its wider impact on the Muslim world. The Maldives, an OIC member since 1976, has consistently aligned with the organization on issues of sovereignty, international law and the rights of Palestinians.

Separately, the Maldives joined 21 countries in condemning what was described as an illegal visit by an Israeli official to the Somaliland region of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The condemnation was issued in a joint statement released by Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and endorsed by foreign ministers from several OIC member states, as well as the organization itself.

The joint statement recalled a previous declaration rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and condemned the January 6 visit as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The ministers reaffirmed their support for Somalia’s unity, warned against encouraging secessionist agendas, and stressed the importance of respecting international law and diplomatic norms.

The statement further called on Israel to revoke its recognition of Somaliland and fully respect Somalia’s sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity, while expressing support for Somalia’s peaceful diplomatic efforts to safeguard its stability.
