Seaplane services have commenced at Terminal One of Velana International Airport with the opening of dedicated check-in counters and passenger transport arrangements.
The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said the seaplane check-in counters at the new terminal are now operational, with designated bus routes in place to transport passengers from Terminal One to the seaplane terminal.
MACL has allocated the Arrival Gate 4 south parking zone exclusively for seaplane operators and MACL staff buses, advising other drivers not to use the area. Unauthorised entry, exit or parking that obstructs vehicle movement is prohibited.
Terminal One features 24 dedicated check-in counters for seaplane passengers. Officials said the facility is expected to improve passenger handling and operational efficiency, supporting the Maldives’ extensive seaplane network.
The seaplane check-in area, located next to the arrival gate, offers a spacious, air-conditioned environment with seating areas and indoor greenery aimed at enhancing passenger comfort.
Terminal One was officially opened on 26 July last year, coinciding with Independence Day. Since then, 41 airlines have moved their operations to the new terminal. While the seaplane check-in area is now in use, some passengers have raised concerns about longer processing times compared to the previous terminal.
MACL said the development is part of broader efforts to enhance the airport experience and provide a premium start to travelers’ journeys.
