New digital platform launched to modernise higher education services

Government efforts to enhance education services are gaining momentum with the launch of a new digital platform aimed at improving higher education administration and student support.

The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development has introduced the Higher Education Management System, known as Kuri, to streamline and strengthen services provided to students. The system was inaugurated by Minister Dr Ali Haidhar Ahmed, who described it as a major step towards improving governance and efficiency in the higher education sector.

According to the Ministry, Kuri offers a more transparent and accountable approach to managing education services, benefiting students, parents, and service providers alike. Students attending the launch were briefed on how to use the platform and access its features.

Iyan Shareef, a Maldivian student studying in Malaysia, said the system would be particularly helpful for students overseas. He noted that the platform would save time and improve transparency, especially in tracking matters such as loan disbursements, which previously required email correspondence and in-person follow-ups at the Ministry.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Ali Haidhar Ahmed said the new system would improve access to scholarships and education loans, reduce delays, and help address financial challenges faced by students. He acknowledged that shortcomings in existing processes had previously caused disruptions, including delays in decision-making that affected students’ education and financial support.

The Minister said Kuri is expected to play a key role in the Maldives 2.0 initiative, which focuses on digitising public institutions, improving governance, and strengthening institutional operations. He added that the platform would significantly reduce long waiting periods for eligibility decisions related to scholarships and funding schemes.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to student-centred services, Dr Ali Haidhar Ahmed said the overarching goal is to ensure that no student misses an educational opportunity due to administrative inefficiencies or financial constraints, expressing confidence that the new system will support students in building a stronger future.
