The Maldives has initiated discussions with Russian authorities to attract more airlines and expand air services between the two countries, as part of efforts to strengthen tourism cooperation and improve connectivity.
The talks are taking place during a high-level Maldivian tourism delegation’s official visit to Russia, which includes engagements in Moscow and St Petersburg.
As part of the visit, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen met with Russian State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Transport Dmitry Zverev in Moscow. Their discussions focused on enhancing aviation links, with both sides expressing support for introducing additional airlines to operate services to the Maldives.
The Maldivian delegation is undertaking a five-day mission aimed at deepening tourism collaboration, increasing flight capacity and building stronger partnerships with stakeholders in the Russian travel industry.
Meetings are also scheduled with senior Russian government officials to discuss cooperation in tourism and civil aviation, along with opportunities to expand air connectivity and strengthen transport links between the two countries.
In addition, the delegation is holding talks with major tour operators, travel trade partners, tourism associations, digital platforms and travel companies in both Moscow and St Petersburg. According to the Ministry of Tourism, these engagements are intended to gather market insights ahead of the upcoming tourism season and the ‘Visit Maldives Year 2027’ campaign, while identifying new travel trends and areas for joint promotional activities.
Industry networking events are also being organised in the two cities, bringing together travel trade representatives, tourism stakeholders and media partners. The events will highlight new developments in the Maldivian tourism sector and reinforce partnerships with key players in the Russian market.
The visit is expected to support efforts to sustain the Maldives’ strong appeal among Russian travellers, attract visitors from emerging segments and further strengthen tourism and aviation ties between the two countries.
