Maldives to Host Global Business and Investment Forums for Small Island States

The Maldives is set to host major international forums aimed at strengthening business, investment and development cooperation among Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with more than 200 participants from over 30 countries expected to take part.

The SIDS Global Business Network Forum 2026 and the inaugural Island Investment Forum will provide a platform for businesses, investors, development agencies and other stakeholders to explore economic opportunities, discuss challenges and share experiences from across SIDS regions. The forums will be held in Malé from August 23 to 25.

Similar to previous editions of the SIDS Global Business Network Forum, this year's programme will focus on the challenges faced by businesses and investors operating in SIDS, as well as opportunities to undertake development projects in these countries.

Participants will have the opportunity to examine economic and business prospects, exchange lessons learned and discuss experiences in finding solutions to challenges confronting island economies. The forum will also create opportunities for businesses, development agencies and investors to establish networks and strengthen connections across different SIDS regions.

The Maldives will use the international gathering to showcase the progress it has achieved, along with expertise and lessons learned in areas where the country has made significant advances. Innovative initiatives undertaken by Maldivian businesses will also be presented to an international audience.

A range of activities will highlight work being carried out in key sectors, including tourism, fisheries, renewable energy and conservation.

The forums are being organised on behalf of the Maldivian government by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, in collaboration with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS).

The Island Investment Forum was envisaged under the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for Small Island Developing States, which was adopted at the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States held in Antigua and Barbuda in 2024.

Established as a biennial forum, the Island Investment Forum is designed to identify investment opportunities in SIDS, provide a platform for networking among investors and island states, and help connect SIDS with potential investors.

This year's gathering will mark the inaugural edition of the Island Investment Forum. It will focus on identifying investment opportunities available in SIDS, examining the challenges associated with investing in island states and exploring possible solutions to those challenges.

The event is expected to bring together more than 200 participants representing over 30 countries, providing the Maldives with an opportunity to strengthen international partnerships while promoting its own development experience, investment potential and innovative business initiatives.
