First Lady Urges Women to Prioritise Their Health and Seek Early Help for Breast Cancer Concerns

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has urged women to prioritise their health and seek medical assistance without delay if they notice anything that could indicate breast cancer.

She made the call while delivering remarks as the chief guest at the opening ceremony of a symposium being held to raise awareness about breast cancer.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed said this year’s breast cancer awareness theme highlights an important reality, stressing that cancer care begins with awareness. She said it is important for women to recognise changes in their bodies, ask questions and have the courage to seek answers.

Noting that a significant number of women are affected by breast cancer, the First Lady said that although the disease may affect one individual, its impact can extend to many others. She therefore emphasised the importance of being alert to changes in the breasts, seeking medical assistance immediately when such changes are detected, and ensuring early diagnosis. She noted that early treatment can significantly improve the chances of recovery.

“To every woman listening to this today, I want to say: please do not delay concerns related to your health. Prioritise your health. Take the first step and seek the assistance of a healthcare professional. It may be the most important decision you make for yourself and for the people you love,” the First Lady said.

The First Lady said encouraging people to seek treatment is part of the work of the healthcare sector, adding that when people come forward for medical care, they should receive the support they need.

She highlighted the importance of quality mammography, ultrasound, biopsy and pathology services in diagnosing breast cancer.

Noting that artificial intelligence tools and advanced technologies are increasingly being used in early cancer detection, First Lady Sajidha said greater investment should be made in technology and new innovations for diagnosis. She also stressed the need to strengthen the skills of healthcare professionals so that these technologies can be used as effectively as possible.

In addition to providing medical treatment, she said it is important to recognise the psychological and physical effects associated with breast cancer and provide patients with the necessary support and information.

The First Lady noted that although the Maldives is geographically dispersed across numerous islands, this should not become an obstacle to providing comprehensive healthcare. She said this can be achieved by expanding healthcare systems and services across different regions.

Highlighting the important role played by families and communities in addressing breast cancer, First Lady Sajidha called for greater support for those affected by the disease and encouraged regular check-ups to promote early detection.

She also urged all women to take responsibility for their own health and seek medical assistance promptly whenever they have concerns.
