A Historic Vision: Financial Self-Sustainability for Islamic Affairs in the Maldives by 2029

Through strategic Waqf investments and Zakat collections, generating a projected combined annual financial flow of MVR 250 million, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments aims to independently finance its operational and Islamic development activities, reducing reliance on the national budget, with the exception of staff salaries.

Zakat funds will be distributed in accordance with Shariah principles, while the proceeds from Waqf investments will be utilised in accordance with their designated purposes. Insha Allah, eight Waqf projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2028, establishing a stronger and more sustainable financial foundation for the Ministry.

This initiative aims to strengthen the Ministry’s long-term institutional capacity to advance Islamic development across the Maldives, including mosque construction and maintenance, Islamic education, support for Imams and religious scholars, Qur’an education programmes, and other sustainable religious and community development initiatives.

A transformative step towards financial independence, sustainable Waqf development, and a lasting legacy of Islamic service for future generations.
