The Hindi Diwas celebrated in Maldives
The Hindi Diwas was celebrated with tremendous enthusiasm and interest at the Indian Cultural Centre in Maldives on 14 September 2017. The programme included recitation of Hindi poems, songs, speeches and cultural presentations by young students, mostly from non-Hindi speaking provinces of India. The event attracted encouraging response from the Indian community with the participation of about 150 people.

Ambassador Shri Akhilesh Mishra, the Chief Guest of the function, applauded the enthusiasm shown by the Indian community and appreciated their love for Hindi language. He highlighted the significance of adoption by the Indian Constitution of Hindi as the official language of the Union of India. He stressed on the younger generation of Indians to have a sense of pride in the richness of Hindi's linguistic and literary heritage. He encouraged them to learn not only the spoken Hindi but also Devnagari script which imparts Hindi its unique identity, phonetic quality and linguistic, cultural and historical connectivity with Sanskrit and several other Indian languages. He said with the growing stature and economic power of India, and rising profile of Indian diaspora, Hindi is going to play an important role as a language of friendship and brotherhood in the world.

Appreciating the participation of non-Hindi speaking Indians in the Hindi Diwas celebration, Ambassador announced that the Indian Cultural Centre would also be hosting similar events dedicated to Malyalam, Tamil, Telugu and other major languages spoken by Indian Community in Maldives.

At the end of the program, Gifts and Certificates were presented by the Ambassador of India to all the participants. Light refreshment was served to all.
