Vice President Abdullah Jihad have said that at present Maldives can generate 2 megawatts from renewable sources of energy and by 2020 the capacity will be increased to 20 megawatts.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the ministerial meeting of AOISIS environment ministers at Bandos Island Resort, he said that it was Maldives that started talking about the impact of climate change on small island nations in an international level.
He said that the government aims to generate at least 30 percent of the electricity in all islands through renewable sources of energy. Speaking at the meeting, environment minister Thoriq Ibrahim said that the most important step required to slow down climate change is to reduce the use of fossil fuels. He said that, it cannot be achieved just by talking.
The minister said that it can be achieved by increasing the use of renewable sources of energy and that is quite expensive. He said that most countries do not have the funds required to do that.
