High Court orders to unfreeze ex-president Yameen’s bank accounts

High Court of the Maldives has ordered to unfreeze former President Yameen’s bank accounts.

Previously the Criminal Court ordered to freeze his accounts regarding the money laundering charges against him. The courts ordered to freeze over 100 million Rufiyaa in his accounts in Bank of Maldives and Islamic Bank of Maldives.

According to Maldives Police Service, large sums of money was deposited to the former president’s account in the past 5 years and they suspected him of conducting illegal financial transactions.

Two weeks before the 2018 presidential election, the Financial Intelligence Unit of the MMA, filed a case to Maldives Police Service stating that 22.5 million Rufiyaa was deposited to the former president’s account. Back then Maldives Police Service did not investigate the case, however they are investigating the matter now.
