The first thing taught to children should be the Quran : Umar Bin Khattab

While we talk about the upbringing of children it is important to think about what we teach them first. Speaking about the matter, Umar Bin Khattab the second rightly guided caliph stated that the Holy Quran should be the first thing taught to children.

Teaching Quran, is not just teaching how to recite it. It is important to teach the meaning of the Quran, as it is the word of Allah. It is the divine law which we should follow. Children can act upon the Quran only when they know what is in it. Hence, this is a responsibility upon the parents.

In addition, Umar Bin Khattab stated that children should be given good names. Hence it is important to name kids after prominent Islamic figures or prophets and their companions. Also it is important that the name given does not have any bad meaning in any language.
