Tourism Minister Ali Waheed has stated that the government is receiving foreign aid to establish cultural centers in 5 areas of Maldives.
Speaking at the inauguration of a stone carving workshop, the minister said that Morocco and South Africa pledges to assist in this regard during the recent partnership forum. “Morocco has historic relations with Maldives. South Africa also pledged to assist in some areas” said the minister.
Minister said that the government will not compromise the culture of Maldives to develop tourism. “Kothaafaru is an island leased for tourism. With the initiative of the President, the lease holders agreed to develop the island by preserving the historic sites in the island” said Ali Waheed.
He further said that the government will lease islands for tourism development in a way which could preserve historic sites on the island. He said that he will propose a cultural tourism concept to the president very soon.
