Beond Airlines Launches Operations at Velana International Airport’s Terminal 1

In a landmark moment for the Maldives aviation industry, Beond Airlines has officially begun operations at Velana International Airport’s Terminal 1, becoming the first luxury carrier to utilize the newly opened state-of-the-art Passenger Terminal.

A transition ceremony was held on Friday at Terminal 1, attended by Minister at the President’s Office for Presidential Affairs, Ali Arif. The event highlighted the government’s vision of positioning the Maldives as a premier luxury aviation hub, while also marking a new phase in the country’s airport infrastructure development.

“This milestone represents more than just another airline commencing services,” said Ibrahim Shareef Mohammed, CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). “It demonstrates Terminal 1’s ability to cater to the full spectrum of the global aviation market—from budget airlines to luxury operators.”

The ceremony brought together key industry figures, including MACL Deputy Managing Directors Mujtaba Lateef and Mohammed Lamaan, along with Beond’s senior management team: General Manager Ibrahim Ahuthuru and Station Manager Hussein Fayaz.

Inaugural Flight Highlights

Beond’s inaugural service from Terminal 1, Flight B4091, was given a traditional water salute. Departing passengers were greeted at the airline’s newly inaugurated check-in counters with welcome gifts, while arriving travelers were entertained with Maldivian cultural performances—a gesture reflecting the airline’s commitment to exceptional hospitality.

Strategic Collaboration

Beond Airlines is the result of a partnership between the Maldives’ SIMDI Group and global aviation experts from Arabex. Targeting the high-end tourism sector, the airline aims to meet the growing demand for premium air travel experiences, aligning with the Maldives’ reputation as a world-class luxury destination.

Terminal 1 Expansion

With Beond’s addition, Terminal 1 now serves three distinct market segments: Maldivian (national carrier), Air Arabia (low-cost carrier), and Beond (luxury carrier). According to industry sources, four more airlines are expected to transition to Terminal 1 in August 2025, further expanding its operational scope and positioning it as a regional aviation hub.

Industry Impact

The integration of diverse airline models at Terminal 1 underscores the facility’s flexibility and global-standard capabilities. “Our objective remains to provide the most comprehensive and highest-quality service to all airlines operating to the Maldives,” said MACL’s CEO, reaffirming the company’s commitment to service excellence.

Economic Significance

The presence of a luxury carrier is expected to deliver strong economic benefits, attracting affluent visitors who contribute significantly through longer stays and luxury spending. Aviation analysts note that Beond’s operations will strengthen the Maldives’ competitive edge in the regional luxury travel market.

Looking Forward

As Terminal 1 expands its partnerships throughout 2025, it is set to play an increasingly pivotal role in the Maldives’ aviation growth and broader economic strategy. The arrival of Beond Airlines marks a strategic evolution in the nation’s aviation landscape—enhancing connectivity for premium travelers while reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a leading luxury tourism destination.
