Maldives Was the First to Answer Sri Lanka’s Call for Cyclone Ditwa Relief, Says High Commissioner

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, Mohamed Rizvi Hassen, has expressed deep gratitude to the Maldivian government and people, noting that the Maldives was the very first nation to respond to Sri Lanka’s appeal for assistance following the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

Speaking during the “Ceylon aa Eku Dhivehin” telethon—an ongoing PSM-led initiative to raise funds for those displaced by the cyclone—High Commissioner Rizvi highlighted the enduring strength of Maldives–Sri Lanka ties and praised the Maldives for consistently standing with Sri Lanka in times of crisis.

He conveyed heartfelt thanks for the swift action taken, adding: “Thank you for your closeness and cooperation. Especially thank you for the initiative and guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.”

The High Commissioner noted that, under President Muizzu’s direction, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry promptly announced both financial aid and immediate relief support to help ensure the safety and essential needs of affected Sri Lankan communities.

Reaffirming the unwavering brotherhood between the two nations, he stressed the urgency of working together on the global stage to address shared environmental vulnerabilities. He emphasised that future collaboration must include stronger advocacy on climate change and efforts to raise awareness among developed nations of the environmental risks faced by smaller countries.
