The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has begun high-level discussions to expand the Maldives’ air connectivity following airspace closures in parts of the Middle East that have disrupted international travel routes.
In a statement, the Ministry said it is closely tracking developments in the region, noting that flights originating from or transiting through Middle Eastern hubs play a crucial role in sustaining tourist arrivals to the island nation. Authorities are now working with airline partners and international aviation bodies to minimise disruption and ensure continuity of service.
The strategy focuses on attracting additional carriers and increasing direct services that bypass affected transit points. Advanced talks are underway with airlines from Southeast Asia, East Asia and India to strengthen alternative routes and reduce dependency on Middle Eastern corridors.
Meanwhile, Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Tourism and Environment, said the government is prioritising measures to cushion the tourism sector from the impact of the crisis. Speaking at a press briefing, he noted that in February the Maldives welcomed an average of 8,800 tourists per day, with approximately 35 percent travelling from or through the Middle East—highlighting the scale of potential disruption.
He explained that increasing direct connections from Europe and other Asian markets, as well as boosting flight frequencies where possible, forms part of the immediate response plan. Authorities are also coordinating with airlines and relevant agencies to assist stranded travellers and facilitate departures.
Reaffirming confidence in the sector, officials stressed that the Maldives remains open to visitors worldwide and continues to uphold international standards in aviation safety and hospitality while adapting to evolving global conditions.
