Maldives, India partner to strengthen island fitness facilities with new agreements

The Maldives and India have formalised a series of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to supply equipment for fitness and recreation centres across 42 islands through India's High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDP) grant assistance programme.

The agreements were signed during a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives, while India's High Commissioner to the Maldives, G Balasubramanian, signed on behalf of the Government of India. Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness Abdulla Rafiu signed as the representative of the implementing agency.

Addressing the ceremony, Foreign Minister Iruthisham described the initiative as an important investment in the health and well-being of communities across the islands. She said the project would encourage healthier and more active lifestyles while improving access to modern fitness facilities, particularly for women and girls. According to the minister, the programme will also support women's empowerment, promote equality and strengthen social inclusion. She further noted that the initiative reflects President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's Maldives First Foreign Policy, which places national interests and development priorities at the forefront of the country's international partnerships.

Minister Rafiu said the new Fitness and Recreation Centres are expected to become valuable community hubs that encourage healthy living, strengthen social engagement and enhance the well-being of island residents. He added that the project will create more opportunities for people of all ages—especially women and young people—to take part in sports and recreational activities, while supporting the long-term health and resilience of local communities.

Both ministers thanked the Government of India for its continued assistance, noting that the project would bring meaningful benefits to communities throughout the Maldives. Minister Iruthisham conveyed her appreciation to the Government and people of India and expressed special thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation. She also acknowledged India's Minister of External Affairs, Dr S. Jaishankar, for his continued support in strengthening ties between the two countries, and thanked High Commissioner Balasubramanian and his team for their efforts to further deepen the Maldives–India partnership.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, High Commissioner Balasubramanian said the agreements reflect the enduring friendship between India and the Maldives. He noted that investments in sports infrastructure under the initiative will improve access to fitness facilities for people living across the atolls and contribute to healthier communities.
