Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla has held discussions with Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives Milton Dick on strengthening parliamentary cooperation and further deepening relations between the Maldives and Australia.
The meeting took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on the sidelines of the second Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, which brings together parliamentary leaders and senior officials to discuss key international issues, including peace, international law, conflict resolution and sustainable development.
During the meeting, the two Speakers discussed opportunities to enhance cooperation between their respective parliaments and explored ways to further strengthen the close bilateral ties between the Maldives and Australia.
The Maldives and Australia established diplomatic relations in 1974 and have since developed cooperation in a number of areas, including education, maritime affairs and maritime security. The two countries also collaborate through various international agreements.
Speaker Abdulla is participating in the second Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, where he is scheduled to deliver an address on the theme “Unity for Peace and Stability: Strengthening International Law and Resolving Issues through Peaceful Means.”
The Maldivian delegation accompanying the Speaker includes Huvadhoo constituency MP Mohamed Shahid, Machangolhi South constituency MP Musthafa Hussain, Faresmaathodaa constituency MP Ashraf Rasheed, Chief of Bureau of the People’s Majlis Ahmed Nihaan Hussain Manik and Assistant Director General of the Parliament’s Foreign Relations Department Zuyyina Badhree.
The conference provides an opportunity for parliamentary leaders from different countries to exchange views on shared global challenges and promote greater cooperation in support of peace, stability, international law and sustainable development.
