President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the negative perception of political activity that has developed in society must be changed, and that every political party should put the national interest ahead of its own political interests.
The President made the remarks while speaking at a special ceremony held to inaugurate the congress of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
Speaking at the ceremony, President Muizzu noted that the Maldivian political landscape has changed over the years, resulting in a negative perception of political activity among young people. He said this perception—that political work is something undesirable—must be changed.
The President said political activities should be carried out with full responsibility and with the national interest given the highest priority. He said that if political work is conducted by putting the country first, political activity can become something highly beneficial to both the people and the nation.
Highlighting the policies of the ruling Congress Party, President Dr Muizzu said all of the party’s policies ultimately stem from the fundamental principle of putting the country first.
He further explained that the government’s overall policies are based on three main principles: national stability, security, and sustainable development.
The President also noted that, in the course of political competition, opposition groups sometimes engage in actions that could cause harm to the country. He called for such approaches and ways of thinking to be abandoned.
Throughout his remarks, the President placed strong emphasis on the importance of always prioritising the national interest over party politics.
