People’s National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group Leader and Inguraidhoo constituency MP Ibrahim Falah has said that increasing the party’s membership to 100,000 by the end of this year is one of its main objectives.
Speaking at the opening session of the ongoing PNC Congress at the Social Centre, Falah said the party has made significant progress in a relatively short period.
He noted that PNC membership, which stood at around 67,000 two months ago, has now increased to 79,364. He said more than 12,000 new members had joined the party within just two months, describing the growth as a major achievement for a newly established political party.
According to Falah, when President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, PNC had only around 3,000 members. However, he said the party has expanded significantly during the President’s tenure and expressed confidence that its membership would surpass 80,000 by the conclusion of the ongoing three-day Congress.
Falah also said members were continuing to remain with the party because they recognize and support PNC’s policies and principles.
Reflecting on the country’s political landscape, Falah said the 2008 Constitution had provided Maldivians with greater opportunities to establish political parties. He said two major political ideologies have largely dominated the country’s political scene, and that people choose political parties based on the visions set out by their leadership for the country’s future and the extent to which presidential manifestos are implemented.
Falah further highlighted President Muizzu’s efforts to strengthen the internal structure and functioning of PNC despite the demanding responsibilities of governing the country.
He said the new party constitution approved at the Congress was passed with the votes of the largest number of members for a party regulation in the political history of the Maldives.
Under the new constitution, Falah said several important new structures have been established within the party. These include a council of religious scholars, youth and women’s wings, as well as a dedicated structure for senior citizens.
He said these developments demonstrate that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is a leader who places importance on all segments of society.
Falah added that the fundamental objective of PNC is to bring stability and development to the country and to deliver benefits and prosperity to the people.
