Ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group Leader and Inguraidhoo constituency MP Ibrahim Falah has called on party members not to allow political opposition groups to create divisions within the PNC following its internal elections.
Speaking at a session of the PNC Congress held today at the Social Centre, Falah said that while elections conducted according to democratic principles would inevitably produce both winners and unsuccessful candidates, all those who contested must prioritize the future and unity of the party regardless of the outcome.
Falah further said all PNC members should remain united with the government in the efforts being undertaken by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to take the country towards new heights.
He also noted that elections for party positions are subject to change, reminding members that those who were unsuccessful today could have an opportunity to succeed tomorrow. He said preventing opposition groups from creating space to weaken the party should be a shared objective of both the leadership and ordinary members.
In the highly contested internal election, six individuals were elected to the positions of PNC Deputy Presidents.
The two candidates who contested the Deputy President positions but were unsuccessful were Local Government Authority (LGA) CEO Mohamed Nimal and Maafannu Central constituency MP Asmaa Rasheed.
In addition to the Deputy Presidents, today’s proceedings also saw the election of 10 women and seven youth members to the PNC’s top council, along with 18 general members to the Members’ Council.
