The People’s National Congress (PNC) Members’ Council has unanimously passed a resolution calling on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who is also the party’s leader, to seek a second term in office.
The resolution was presented to the council by PNC member Abdulla Ibrahim at a meeting chaired by PNC Chairperson Abdulla Rahim. It was passed with the full support of all 1,119 members who participated in the meeting.
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef also supported the resolution.
Parliament Speaker and PNC Chairperson Abdulla Rahim said the resolution represents the most important task that can be undertaken by the PNC Members’ Council, adding that, in the view of party members, continuing along the path set out by President Dr Muizzu would be the most beneficial course for the country and its people.
The resolution highlights what it describes as achievements by President Muizzu since he assumed office in 2023, including measures aimed at providing services that citizens can be proud of and value.
It specifically points to efforts to safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty, strengthen the Maldives’ capacity to protect and manage its maritime territory using its own resources, and ensure that there are no foreign military forces stationed in the Maldives.
The resolution also highlights financial reforms being pursued by the administration to strengthen the economy and realise the “Dhivehinge Raajje” (Maldives of the Maldivian people) vision.
In addition, it cites the government’s efforts to diversify the economy, advance the fisheries and agricultural sectors, and find lasting solutions to housing-related challenges.
The resolution further points to policies aimed at addressing issues involving foreigners residing or working in violation of regulations, as well as the President’s role in advocating for the rights of the Muslim Ummah and the Palestinian people in the international arena.
According to the resolution, PNC members believe that granting President Muizzu a second term is important to ensure that the stability and development being brought to the country can continue without interruption.
The resolution also refers to Article 88 of the PNC’s basic regulations. Under the provision, if a sitting member of the party wishes to contest for a second presidential term, that individual is to be assured the party’s presidential ticket without the need for a primary election.
