Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muthalib has said everyone must work together to secure President Dr Mohamed Muizzu a successful second term in the 2028 presidential election, in order to ensure that major development projects already under way can continue without interruption.
Speaking at a meeting of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) Members’ Council, Minister Muthalib said Maldivian businesses have now gained confidence that the government can implement measures whenever necessary to serve the interests and welfare of the people.
He said that, although previous administrations may have operated primarily in ways preferred by the business community, President Muizzu has demonstrated that the country can instead be steered in a direction desired by the people.
Muthalib further noted that while a significant number of the major projects launched by the government as part of its national development agenda have been completed, not all ongoing work can be completed by 2028.
He warned that if a change of government takes place at that stage and another administration is given the opportunity to dismantle or abandon projects and initiatives that have already been established, much of the progress achieved so far could be lost, potentially creating difficulties for future generations.
For this reason, the minister said securing a second term for President Muizzu is extremely important.
“We will not be able to complete all the work we have started by 2028. If, at that point, the government changes and another party takes over and is given the opportunity to dismantle what we have built, we will have to worry about what this means for our children,” Muthalib said.
During the meeting, the PNC Members’ Council also passed a special resolution calling on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to contest the 2028 presidential election on behalf of the party.
The resolution, proposed by Abdulla Ibrahim, the PNC’s special delegate from the Fuvahmulah City South constituency, was unanimously approved by all 1,119 members of the Members’ Council who participated in the meeting.
The resolution states that President Muizzu should be granted a second term so that the services and development initiatives being delivered to the country under his administration can continue without interruption.
According to the PNC’s basic regulations, if a sitting party member serving as President expresses an intention to seek a second term, that member is to be given the party’s presidential ticket without the need for an internal primary election.
