No Leader in Maldivian History Has Reached Out to the People Like President Muizzu, Says Saleem

People’s Majlis Deputy Speaker and PNC member for the Eydhafushi constituency Ahmed Saleem has said that no leader in the history of the Maldives has paid as much attention to the circumstances of ordinary citizens as President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Saleem made the remarks while expressing his support for the resolution submitted to the highest council of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), calling for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to be formally nominated to contest the 2028 presidential election.

According to Saleem, the main reason for his support for the resolution is that President Muizzu continues to work closely with the people.

He noted that President Muizzu has visited islands across the country two, three and even four times during his time in office, meeting residents and directly observing their circumstances. Saleem said that, even within the first two and a half years of his administration, no previous Maldivian leader had visited and engaged with citizens to such an extent.

“The biggest reason I support President Dr Muizzu is that he works alongside the people. So far, he has visited every island in the Maldives twice, three times or even four times. He has observed the circumstances of the people. Even within two and a half years, there has never been a leader in the history of the Maldives who has paid this much attention to the people.”

Saleem further said President Muizzu has been listening to the concerns and complaints of citizens and working to find solutions to the issues they raise.

He added that the President has introduced measures that, in his view, no previous leader had undertaken, and said the resulting benefits would reach Maldivian citizens.

“I am certain that a person who serves as President will meet with a large number of people, even if it is not possible to meet each of the 400,000 people individually. Therefore, I believe the President should be retained in office in 2028,” Saleem said.

The PNC Congress has unanimously decided to award President Muizzu the party’s presidential ticket for the 2028 election without holding a primary.

The decision was approved unanimously by the 1,119 delegates who participated in the Congress.
