President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that all actions of the People’s National Congress (PNC) are based on Islam and nationalism.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the PNC’s National Congress tonight, President Muizzu said that from the very first day of taking office, the current administration has been working to uphold and strengthen Islam and promote Islamic civilisation.
Reflecting on the past and the way affairs are being conducted today, the President said that whenever governments representing ideologies other than the PNC have come to power, their actions have at times been based on ideologies that could undermine the country.
He said the most beneficial path for the nation is to move forward with the PNC. The President added that his administration spends every day working among the people and governing in accordance with their wishes and aspirations.
President Muizzu stressed that decisions made by the people can shape the future of the country. However, he said history shows that, at times, political circumstances have led to decisions that were not in the country’s best interests.
He therefore emphasised that the nation must always be placed first when making decisions.
The President further said that many of the traditional values of respect among Maldivians have diminished because of efforts undertaken with the intention of undermining the dignity of the country’s leaders since the introduction of the political system in the Maldives. He described this as being contrary to Islam and traditional Maldivian customs.
“Whenever the country has been governed by ideologies opposed to our beliefs, it has not always been the country that was placed first. At times, things contrary to our religion have taken place. There have been circumstances that required Maldivians to unite in defence of Islam,” the President said.
President Muizzu said he had reflected on the differences between the PNC and other political ideologies and wanted the party’s actions to be understood in that context.
He said such reflection demonstrates that the PNC is a party committed to equality, justice and sincerity, and described it as the only party that remains committed to a philosophy centred on national development and construction.
President Muizzu added that the PNC would continue moving forward based on this philosophy and said the unity and strength of the party’s ranks stem from these principles.
