The Maldives and China are set to organise a series of exhibitions next year to showcase the maritime heritage and historical ties between the two countries, following the signing of an important cooperation agreement between the Maldives’ Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage and China’s Tianjin National Maritime Museum.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed on behalf of the Maldives, while Wang Long, Director of the Tianjin National Maritime Museum, signed on behalf of China.
Under the agreement, a special exhibition by the Tianjin National Maritime Museum will be held at the Maldives’ National Museum early next year. It has also been agreed that a special exhibition highlighting Maldivian heritage will be held at museums in different Chinese cities.
This will mark the first time that an exhibition organised by the Maldives’ National Museum will be held overseas.
Speaking to PSM News, Minister Heena said the exhibitions will focus on the development of maritime travel and the maritime sector, as well as the historical connections that developed between the Maldives and China through the ancient Maritime Silk Road.
She said the exhibitions will provide an opportunity to share information about the historical relationship and maritime exchanges between the two countries with audiences around the world.
The agreement also provides for joint research into archaeological sites and artefacts located in different parts of the Maldives.
According to Minister Heena, discussions have also been held on providing technical assistance and training for Maldivian artists and professionals working in the heritage sector, as well as offering specialised support to strengthen the study, preservation and protection of the country’s cultural heritage.
She said the cooperation would help increase international awareness of the Maldives’ rich cultural and historical heritage.
The Minister added that showcasing Maldivian history and culture on the international stage would help highlight the country as a nation with a rich historical legacy, while contributing to efforts to preserve and pass its cultural heritage on to future generations.
