President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the People’s National Congress (PNC) has strengthened its leadership and unity through the party’s Majlis, or Congress.
President Muizzu made the remarks while speaking on PSM’s “Nation Chat” programme.
The President described the PNC Congress as a comprehensive congress that established the necessary structures for the party. He said the Congress has paved the way for the party to carry out its activities in a more organised manner.
“I am pleased that the Congress has been completed so comprehensively. This was a very comprehensive Congress conducted according to democratic principles. I want democracy to be strengthened in the Maldives. Democracy will be strengthened when political parties become stronger, and when the functioning of political parties is strengthened,” President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said.
The President said the PNC Congress had determined how the party would move forward with its work. He also expressed confidence that the party would always put the country first in carrying out its activities and would not undertake anything that could harm the nation.
President Muizzu said this was also the shared outlook of everyone within the PNC.
Muizzu says leadership is a major responsibility
At the recently concluded PNC Congress, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was selected as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
Asked about this, President Muizzu said he did not regard leadership as a source of great personal pleasure, but rather as a major trust and responsibility.
He said his focus was on fulfilling the government’s pledges and continuing efforts to achieve what the people of the Maldives genuinely need.
“I receive the support of many people in carrying out these responsibilities. When the PNC Congress delegates unanimously decided and nominated me, I accepted that decision and decided to move forward. In carrying out leadership and every responsibility associated with leadership, I will work with great seriousness. Every moment of every day that I spend will be time spent serving the people,” President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said.
PNC membership exceeds 80,000
When the PNC’s Majlis was convened, the party had 79,364 members. The Congress concluded after the number of party members increased to more than 80,000.
More than 1,300 delegates participated in the Congress, during which six deputy presidents were elected following competitive elections.
The Congress also approved amendments to the party’s basic rules with the votes of more than 1,000 members.
The PNC described the developments as historic achievements for the party.
The Congress also marked the first time an electronic voting system was used at a congress of a political party in the Maldives.
