Maldives Fully Prepared to Safeguard Its Maritime Territory with Increased Resources

17 More Vessels to Be Acquired for Maritime Patrols

Construction of 12 Sea Ambulances Underway

Defence and National Service Minister Hassan Rasheed has said that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is fully prepared to protect and safeguard the country’s maritime territory, with additional resources being provided to strengthen its capabilities.

At a question-and-answer forum held tonight, a member of the public asked about the level of preparedness of the Maldivian military to protect the country’s maritime territory, particularly its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Questions were also raised about the country’s readiness to respond to potential incursions by foreign parties into Maldivian territory.

Minister Rasheed said the MNDF remains on constant alert to ensure the security of the Maldives’ maritime territory. He added that the military could carry out its duties effectively by ensuring it has the necessary resources.

The Minister said that significant efforts have been made to strengthen the country’s national defence capabilities since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office. These include acquiring a vessel from Türkiye, deploying military drones to monitor the country’s airspace, and obtaining additional resources, including a vessel donated by the Australian Government.

“President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is making significant efforts to increase resources. Priority is being given to strengthening capacity by acquiring additional vessels and other resources,” Minister of Defence and National Service Hassan Rasheed said.

The Minister said efforts to acquire additional vessels required by the Coast Guard are ongoing. So far, three additional vessels have been obtained for patrol operations.

He said a further 17 vessels would be acquired, with some expected to arrive in the Maldives next November. He also confirmed that construction of 12 sea ambulances is underway.

Minister Rasheed said the Maldives is fully prepared to respond to attacks from foreign parties and other similar situations, while continuing to strengthen the country’s security and defence capabilities.

Given that much of the Maldives’ territory consists of maritime areas, the Government is working to enhance the country’s capacity to safeguard its waters and maximise the benefits derived from its marine resources.
