President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed confidence that his ongoing state visit to Pakistan will further strengthen relations between the two countries and create new opportunities for cooperation.
In a social media post following his arrival, President Muizzu described the visit as a great honour and conveyed his sincere appreciation to the Government and people of Pakistan for the warm welcome extended to him.
He said he hoped the visit would facilitate important meetings and discussions aimed at deepening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
President Muizzu was formally received in Pakistan during a state visit hosted by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. Upon his arrival at the Prime Minister’s official residence, a military Guard of Honour was presented in recognition of the visiting head of state. First Lady Sajidha Mohamed accompanied the President during the arrival ceremony.
The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Prime Minister Sharif, includes high-level discussions with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, the prime minister and other senior officials.
President Muizzu and Prime Minister Sharif are also scheduled to witness the exchange of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) designed to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors. The Maldivian President is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising Cabinet members and senior government officials.
The visit marks the first time in a decade that a Maldivian president has undertaken an official visit to Pakistan. It also coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, established on 26 July 1966.
The state visit is expected to provide fresh momentum to the longstanding partnership between the Maldives and Pakistan, building on their shared ties and opening avenues for closer collaboration in the years ahead.
