President Muizzu Featured in TIME100 Health 2026 for Public Health Leadership

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has been named to TIME magazine’s TIME100 Most Influential People in Health 2026, in recognition of his administration’s strong focus on advancing public health in the Maldives.

TIME highlighted the Maldives as the first country to implement a “generational smoking ban” under President Muizzu’s leadership. The policy prohibits the sale of tobacco products to anyone born after January 2007. The magazine also noted the 2024 ban on the import, sale, and use of vapes and e-cigarettes, part of a broader strategy aimed at phasing out tobacco use nationwide.

In addition to legislative measures, the government has established free tobacco cessation clinics across all islands and introduced a 24/7 mental health helpline to expand access to support services.

The publication further recognized the Maldives as the first country in the world to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B.

The World Health Organization (WHO) congratulated President Muizzu on his inclusion in the TIME100 Health list. In a statement shared on social media, WHO described the recognition as a reflection of the Maldives’ efforts to strengthen preventive healthcare and promote public well-being. The organization also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country in achieving Universal Health Coverage and ensuring health security for all.

President Muizzu’s inclusion in the list underscores the international attention drawn to the Maldives’ recent public health reforms and outcomes.
